I was sitting in the newsroom yesterday when I got a call that made my day.
If you follow this blog, you might remember the previous post about the 77 Lancers, and how they sort of rescued a 16-year-old girl's birthday party. It was a touching story, one the Lancers should be proud of.
That girl's mother called the newsroom the other day. She hadn't seen the blog, obviously, or the column I'd had in the paper Tuesday. But she wanted someone in the Lancers' hometown to know what a wonderful they'd done for her daughter.
Sandra Taylor, mother of Sweet 16 Tina Taylor, had this to say:
"She was broken hearted. She was devastated. And then there's these busloads of teenagers coming in and, after speaking with a chaperon, within 10 minutes they all came in. ... They saved the day. They really saved the day."
Instead of a night filled with tears ...
"I saw her smiling, laughing, talking to people."
And at the end of the night, the Lancers included Tina in their Lancer anthem, a song that reminds people that, in Lancers, and everyone is valued.
She just wanted Mankato to know that our kids made a big difference in the life of her kid.
